On the sidelines of the COP16 Conference of the Parties to the Convention to Combat Desertification, Uzbekistan's Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change, Aziz Abdukhakimov, met with Jennifer Morris, Chief Executive Officer of The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the oldest international environmental organization.
Founded in 1951 in the United States, The Nature Conservancy is a globally recognized environmental organization operating in 80 countries. It manages representative offices in 41 nations and boasts an annual turnover of $1.7bn.
During the meeting, Jennifer Morris congratulated Uzbekistan on its progress in environmental protection, particularly highlighting the establishment of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) office in the country. Minister Abdukhakimov provided an overview of Uzbekistan's extensive environmental reforms and climate change initiatives.
Morris was particularly impressed by the Central Asian University for the Study of the Environment and Climate Change (Green University) in Tashkent. She expressed TNC’s interest in supporting educational programs at the university, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to fostering environmental education.
The discussions also covered TNC's expertise in land management, geology, and conflict resolution in intersectoral matters, as evidenced by its work in developed nations.
The two parties agreed to send a TNC mission to Uzbekistan to conduct a detailed analysis of the country’s environmental needs and identify areas for collaboration. This partnership is expected to further enhance Uzbekistan's capacity to address pressing ecological challenges.
Additionally, Morris confirmed her participation in the upcoming 20th Conference of the Parties to the CITES Convention (CITES COP20), set to take place in Samarkand in November 2025.
