The Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of Uzbekistan, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), launched a new joint project aimed at advancing the "Yashil Makon" Initiative. The initiative focuses on Master Planning and Innovative Financial Solutions to support sustainable development in Uzbekistan.
The project, introduced during a recent event, seeks to implement the "Yashil Makon" initiative, which aims to transform the country’s environment through ecological and social strategies. It includes developing a master plan, introducing innovative financial solutions, and creating income sources for vulnerable communities and forcibly displaced individuals in the Surkhandarya region.
Key discussions at the event emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders. Participants reviewed the project’s goals, core components, and timeline. They also highlighted the significance of future cooperation between the Government of Uzbekistan, UNDP, UNECE, UNHCR, and other partners.
“The 'Yashil Makon' initiative is a critical step towards a sustainable future for Uzbekistan. We are honored to have the support of international partners like UNDP, UNECE, and UNHCR,” stated Aziz Abduhakimov, Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of Uzbekistan.
UNDP Resident Representative in Uzbekistan, Akiko Fujii, stressed the importance of partnerships, “Restoring degraded lands through large-scale afforestation will not only revive ecosystems but also create sustainable livelihoods for local communities, contributing to environmental resilience and poverty reduction.”
Dumitru Lipcanu, UNHCR Acting Representative for Central Asia, highlighted that the project will improve self-reliance and economic inclusion for displaced individuals while incorporating their efforts into climate change mitigation.
The project will employ innovative approaches to ensure long-term sustainability, including afforestation pilot sites and plant nurseries in Surkhandarya. It will engage local communities, including forcibly displaced individuals, in planting activities and explore carbon credit trading to attract additional resources.
The roadmap presented during the event outlines clear milestones and expected outcomes, setting the stage for the initiative’s success and its positive impact on both the environment and economy of Uzbekistan.
