The Central Asian University of Environment and Climate Change ("Green University") recently hosted the opening ceremony for a complex scientific expedition focused on the ecology and environment of the Aral Sea's drybed.
This joint effort, involving the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan, the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, and the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, aims to address the ecological crisis in the region.
Aziz Abdukhakimov, Minister of Ecology, highlighted the importance of the expedition in understanding and mitigating the negative impacts of the Aral Sea's desiccation.
"Today's expedition represents a major step towards a comprehensive scientific analysis of the region. I am confident that our combined efforts will yield valuable results, paving the way for new ecological projects and initiatives," stated Abdukhakimov.
The expedition, endorsed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, aligns with the government's ongoing commitment to restoring the regional ecosystem and alleviating the effects of the Aral Sea's drying. Research will focus on changes in the ecosystem, soil conditions, and regional biodiversity.
"We aim to study microorganism biodiversity, soil composition, and mineral deposits. The salt from the Aral Sea's bed is now affecting distant regions, including China and the West. The data we collect will assist in decision-making to stabilize the environmental situation," Shahlo Turdiqulova explained the scientific goals of the expedition.
The event featured presentations of flags by organizers from the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan and the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, marking the official start of the expedition. The ceremony concluded with informal discussions among team members to establish collaborative efforts for the forthcoming research.
