In Uzbekistan, 61 foreign companies providing electronic services paid a total of UZS 101.9bn ($7.96mn) in taxes during the first nine months of 2024. This marks an increase of 2.1 times compared to the UZS 48.3bn ($3.77mn) reported in the same period last year, according to the press service of the Tax Committee.
The surge in tax revenues stresses the growing impact of foreign digital services on the Uzbek economy. Leading the charge are major tech firms such as Meta, Google, and Apple, which, along with seven other companies, accounted for 99.9% of all taxes paid in the sector. Specifically, Meta, which includes Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, contributed UZS 41.1bn ($3.2mn). Google followed with UZS 26.1bn ($2.04mn), and Apple contributed UZS 22.6bn ($1.77mn). Other contributors included Amazon, Booking.com, Zoom, Netflix, Acca, Yandex Europe, and Xsolla, each contributing various amounts to the total tax revenue.
Surprisingly, in the first half of 2024, Xsolla emerged as the 10th largest contributor, replacing Adobe, which was previously in the top 10. Additionally, Yandex Europe entered the rankings as a new contributor, taking the 9th position and bumping Xsolla down.
In comparison, only 60 foreign companies paid UZS 48.4bn ($3.78) in taxes during the first half of 2023. The year-on-year data also highlights a growing presence of electronic service providers in the country, with the number of such companies increasing from 31 in 2022 to 52 in 2023, reaching 61 by 2024.
Additionally, in 2024 the total volume of electronic services provided in Uzbekistan reached UZS 849.1bn ($66.3mn), which is 1.9 times higher than the UZS 440.8bn ($34.44mn) recorded in the same period last year.
The rise in tax contributions and the expansion of foreign electronic service providers reflect a robust and evolving digital economy in Uzbekistan, showcasing the country's increasing attractiveness as a destination for global tech companies.
