Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov expressed strong disagreement with Western countries' attempts to dictate terms of cooperation with Russia in a recent interview with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin, emphasizing Kyrgyzstan's sovereignty in its foreign relations. The interview was conducted during the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the CIS Member States in Moscow and was broadcast on the program "Moscow. Kremlin. Putin."
Japarov highlighted a perceived hypocrisy among Western nations, noting that while they advocate for restrictions on partnerships with Russia, they themselves engage in cooperation.
"When I travel around Europe, they say one thing but do another. There are European countries that are part of NATO or the European Union, and they cooperate with Russia. But they should not tell us, or ask us, not to cooperate with Russia or the CIS," he stated.
The president's remarks come amidst Kyrgyzstan's ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with Russia.
It was recently announced that Kyrgyz students would have the opportunity to enroll in Russian universities through a quota program for the academic year 2025/26. The Russian government has allocated 700 spots for free education of Kyrgyz citizens in its higher education institutions, further solidifying educational and cultural ties between the two countries.
