Construction to begin in 2024
The construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, previously reported to be frozen, is now set to commence in 2024. This announcement was made by Zhalyn Jeenaliyev, the Deputy Director of the Kyrgyz National Investment Agency. The news was further confirmed by the government of Kyrgyzstan and the company "Kyrgyz Temir Zholu".
Strategic Shift: From 2023 to 2024
Originally, the construction of the railway was planned to be launched in 2023. However, the Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic, Akylbek Japarov, announced at the end of November that the implementation of the project would begin the following year.
Cost and route: investment in connectivity
The cost of the project from China to Uzbekistan is estimated to be between $3bn and $5bn. The railway will span approximately 450 km, with the majority of the route (around 280 km) passing through the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic.
Impact: boosting trade and economic growth
The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and trade in the region. By providing a direct link between China and Uzbekistan, the railway will facilitate the movement of goods and stimulate economic growth. The project is also expected to strengthen the role of Central Asia as a transit region for goods between East and West.
