Prime Minister Akylbek Zhaparov emphasized the importance of the Ak-Buura River as he inaugurated a new small hydroelectric power station on the Papan reservoir. The river, which provides vital water resources to the city of Osh at the base of the sacred Sulaiman-Too mountain, serves as a symbol of strength and resilience, according to Zhaparov.
"Building a hydroelectric power station on the Ak-Buura River is crucial for our community," Zhaparov stated. "The name of this river speaks of its power. Our ancestors recognized the camel as the mightiest animal, and among camels, the buura stands out. This river, much like the buura, has long flowed with intensity, inspiring the works of our celebrated poet Aaly Tokombaev and the renowned author Chyngyz Aitmatov. Our objective is to harness this power and transform it into electricity to enhance the lives of our citizens."
During the ceremony, held as part of his working visit to the Osh region, Zhaparov highlighted the government's commitment to energy development. He noted that the state has made significant investments in the sector, with projects like the Bala-Saruu and Kainama hydroelectric power plants already commissioned this year.
The new Papan hydroelectric power station, designed with a capacity of 25 megawatts, is projected to generate an average of 103mn kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually. The investment for this project is estimated at $27mn.
"This construction marks a strategic move toward achieving energy independence for our nation," Zhaparov concluded.
The Papan reservoir, located within the Papan gorge at the narrowest point of the Ak-Buura River valley, began construction in 1979 and was completed in 1985. With the new hydroelectric power station, the government aims to further enhance energy production and ensure a stable electricity supply for the region.
