The President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Japarov, inaugurated the Kainama small hydroelectric power plant (HPP) on July 22 during his working visit to the Jalal-Abad region.
Construction of the Kainama HPP, located in the Toktogul district, commenced in November 2023 and was completed in 2024. The plant features two hydro units with a combined capacity of 9.6 MW.
In his remarks, President Japarov congratulated the local community on the completion of the project and highlighted its importance as a major advancement for the national energy sector. He emphasized that the new plant addresses long-standing energy challenges and represents a crucial step toward solving the nation's energy problems.
The president stressed the government's commitment to building more hydroelectric power stations as a priority for enhancing energy infrastructure. He called on business leaders and investors to support and engage in future energy projects.
Japarov detailed the $9.3mn investment in the Kainama project, funded by Raiffeisen Landesbank Steiermark and the Kyrgyz-Russian Development Fund. He noted that the plant will be a significant economic contributor as one of the largest taxpayers in the Toktogul district, with an annual energy production of 39.2mn kilowatt-hours. This output will meet the energy needs of Uch-Terek village and part of Kara-Kul city.
The president also discussed the country's potential for expanding its hydroelectric capacity, mentioning ongoing and planned projects in the Orto-Tokoi and Papan reservoirs. He expressed confidence in the growing expertise of Kyrgyz energy specialists, who are enhancing their skills to ensure a reliable energy supply.
During his visit, Japarov engaged with local residents, addressing their questions and discussing ongoing efforts to improve living conditions through the construction of multi-storey buildings in villages by the State Mortgage Company. This initiative aims to enhance housing conditions while preserving agricultural lands.
