In 2023, Russia emerged as Tajikistan’s leading trading partner, capturing a share of 20.6%. The mutual trade turnover between the two countries exceeded $1.7bn, reflecting the strengthening of economic ties, Avesta reports.
Growth in Trade Turnover
The trade turnover between Russia and Tajikistan in 2023 increased by 2.7%, reaching $1,714.9mn, while the physical volumes of goods traded increased by 12.6%, amounting to 1.3mn tons.
Structure of Russian Exports
In the structure of Russian exports to Tajikistan, mineral products accounted for 40.1%. In addition to petroleum products, the main goods exported were food, chemical products, wood and wood products, ferrous metals, mechanical products, and other goods.
Comparison with Afghanistan
It was earlier reported that in contrast, the mutual trade turnover between Tajikistan and Afghanistan in 2023 amounted to about $97mn. The export of goods from Tajikistan to Afghanistan exceeded $93mn, while the import of goods from Afghanistan amounted to $4mn. This figure is approximately 2.7 times lower than the mutual trade between neighboring Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, which reached $266mn in the same period.
