In 2023, the exports of goods from Tajikistan to Afghanistan exceeded $93mn, while imports from Afghanistan amounted to $4mn, EurAsia daily reports. This resulted in a mutual trade turnover of about $97mn. However, these figures represent a nearly 12% decrease from the previous year, when the total trade turnover between the two countries reached $110mn.
Tajikistan’s exports to Afghanistan are diverse, with electricity making up the majority. Other significant exports include industrial goods, cement, coal, and mineral fertilizers. On the other hand, Tajikistan mainly imports fruits and vegetables from Afghanistan, particularly to its border regions.
Uzbekistan-Afghanistan Trade
In contrast to the Tajikistan-Afghanistan trade dynamics, the trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan saw a significant increase in 2023. The total trade between the two countries amounted to $266mn, marking a more than sixfold increase from 2022.
Exports from Afghanistan to Uzbekistan amounted to $27mn, while imports from Uzbekistan stood at $239mn. The primary goods exported to Uzbekistan include dried fruits, fruit juices, apricots, sesame seeds, and carpets. In contrast, Afghanistan mainly imports electricity, flour, beans, chemical fertilizers, oil, and gas from Uzbekistan.
Comparative Analysis
The trade dynamics between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, present a stark contrast. While the former saw a decrease in trade turnover, the latter experienced a significant increase. This divergence underscores the varying economic relationships Afghanistan maintains with its neighboring countries.
The mutual trade turnover between Tajikistan and Afghanistan was approximately 2.7 times lower than that between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan for the same period. This indicates a stronger economic relationship between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, potentially driven by the broader range of goods exchanged between the two countries.
