In a stride towards enhancing economic and investment cooperation, President Emomali Rahmon of the Republic of Tajikistan met with the Chief of Investments at Qatar Investment Authority, Sheikh Faisal Bin Thani Al Thani on January 21, during his state visit to the State of Qatar, the presidential press service reported.
President Rahmon expressed his admiration for the State of Qatar, considering it one of the most crucial commercial, economic, and investment partners for Tajikistan. The meeting emphasized the shared commitment to further developing and expanding relations, particularly in the fields of industry and energy.
Both parties acknowledged the substantial opportunities for attracting Qatari capital to Tajikistan and proposed the active participation of Qatar in the implementation of priority projects beneficial to both nations. The talks centered on the immense potential for cooperation in leveraging Tajikistan's transit capabilities in the Eurasian region, tapping into renewable energy resources, and collaborating in the extraction and processing of minerals.
One of the key proposals made during the meeting was the establishment of wholesale distribution and logistics centers in Tajikistan for the processing, packaging, and export of agricultural products to Qatar. This move is anticipated to be mutually beneficial, aligning with Tajikistan's strengths and Qatar's growing demand for agricultural goods.
Additionally, both parties discussed the creation of a "Joint Economic and Investment Fund" aimed at financing priority projects in the Republic of Tajikistan. This strategic initiative underscores the commitment to fostering long-term economic cooperation between the two nations.
Historical Roots and 30 Years of Flourishing Relations
The diplomatic relations between Qatar and Tajikistan were established in 1994 during the Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit in Morocco. Over the past 30 years, bilateral ties have grown significantly, marked by the opening of the Qatari embassy in Dushanbe in 2012 and the Tajik embassy in Doha in 2013.
The strong bonds between the two countries are deeply rooted in spiritual and historical connections, as well as the amicable relationship between their leaders, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Emomali Rahmon. Trust and mutual respect form the foundation of this relationship, with Qatar being the first Arabian Gulf country to recognize Tajikistan’s independence and the first Arab country to invest in it through the notable $300mn Diar Dushanbe project.
Qatar's commitment to Tajikistan's development is evident in the financing of Central Asia’s largest mosque, the Imam Azam Abu Hanifa Nu’man ibn Thabit Central Cathedral Mosque of Dushanbe. Spanning over 12 hectares and accommodating 133,000 worshippers, this mosque stands as a testament to the enduring friendship between Qatar and Tajikistan.
