The construction of the Roghun hydropower plant is anticipated to alleviate electricity shortages in Tajikistan during winter, according to the Updated Environmental and Social Assessment for the Roghun Hydropower Project released by the NBO Roghun Open Joint-Stock Company (OJSC), Asia Plus reported on January 19.
Presently, individuals in rural regions experience limited electricity access, with only a few hours of supply in the morning and evening. The ongoing construction of the Roghun hydropower plant is seen as a crucial initiative to address these challenges and generate substantial economic, social, and environmental benefits for Tajikistan and the wider Central Asia region. The project aims to be financially, environmentally, and socially sustainable, contributing to the decarbonization of the region.
Once completed, the Roghun Hydropower Plant (HPP) is expected to play a vital role in meeting Tajikistan's domestic energy needs, particularly during winter, and facilitating the export of surplus electricity to neighboring countries. The construction of the reservoir, a key component of the Roghun HPP, is projected to be completed by 2029, with the water level reaching its maximum in 2036.
The Roghun HPP, one of the largest projects in the region, holds the potential to significantly contribute to Tajikistan's sustainable development by efficiently harnessing natural resources, including clean and affordable "green" energy. Two out of the planned six turbines are already in operation, producing energy for sale to fund the project's completion. President Emomali Rahmon announced plans to introduce the next unit of the Roghun HPP into operation in 2025.
