The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, held a crucial meeting with the Ambassador of Japan to Tajikistan, Toshihiro Aiki, on January 17, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported. The discussions revolved around the current state of bilateral relations and strategies to further enhance cooperation between the two nations across various sectors.
The meeting covered a broad spectrum of topics, including economic and social collaboration, personnel training, scientific and cultural ties, as well as the implementation of previously signed cooperation documents and joint projects. Both parties expressed a commitment to fostering stronger ties and exploring new avenues of collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
A key highlight of the meeting was the emphasis on the significance of reinforcing cooperation within the "Central Asia + Japan" Dialogue. This regional framework aims to facilitate dialogue and cooperation between Central Asian countries, including Tajikistan, and Japan. The dialogue serves as a platform for addressing common challenges and exploring opportunities for mutual growth and development.
Diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Japan were established on February 2, 1992, and have since evolved positively. The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in Japan was inaugurated on November 28, 2007, while the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe started its operations on January 26, 2002.
Over the years, the two nations have built a robust foundation for practical cooperation, marked by a high level of partnership, mutual trust, and respect. Regular bilateral consultations, including those in 2013 and 2018 in Dushanbe, have played a crucial role in strengthening and advancing diplomatic ties.
A significant milestone in the relations between Tajikistan and Japan was the inaugural meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on economic, scientific, and technical cooperation, which took place in Tokyo on April 14, 2017. The legal framework governing the relationship is supported by more than 63 Intergovernmental Agreements, underscoring the depth and breadth of collaboration.
The Central Asia + Japan Dialogue has proven to be a vital platform for fostering cooperation. The 7th Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of Central Asia and Japan, held in Dushanbe on May 16-17, 2019, showcased the commitment of both parties to regional stability and development.
