A tragic accident on Maryland's Capital Beltway on August 1 claimed the life of a woman and left nine others injured, as a white Mercedes SUV traveled the wrong way on the highway, causing a devastating multi-vehicle collision, ABC news reported. Maryland State Police responded swiftly to the scene and are investigating the incident.
As per the preliminary reports, the harrowing incident occurred when the Mercedes SUV, driven by 23-year-old Jayleen Hannor of Macon, Georgia, entered the northbound lanes of I-270, heading toward the outer loop of I-495. The SUV collided with a Lexus and a Nissan Pathfinder, wreaking havoc on the unsuspecting drivers.
The impact of the crash was severe, causing significant injuries to the occupants of both the Lexus and the Nissan. Five adults in the Lexus and two adults and three children in the Nissan were among those injured in the collision. Emergency services rushed to the scene and promptly transported the injured individuals to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Tragically, the driver of the Nissan, a yet-to-be-identified female, succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at an area hospital. The authorities are withholding her identity until her next of kin can be notified and informed of the devastating news.
Following the incident, Jayleen Hannor fled the scene, but law enforcement was quick to locate and apprehend her. She was taken into custody and transported to the Rockville Barrack, where she is being held on pending charges related to the wrong-way crash.
