In the aftermath of the military junta's coup in Niger that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, tensions between the country and its former colonial power, France, have escalated, The Guardian reported. France has taken swift action by starting the evacuation of its citizens and other Europeans from Niger, which marks a departure from its reaction to previous coups in neighbouring countries Mali and Burkina Faso. The evacuation process involves three planned flights, with the first landing in Paris in the evening of August 1, carrying 262 people, including French and other European nationals.
However, the United States has not yet initiated evacuations of its citizens from Niger, though it has suspended certain activities such as training with Niamey's forces. Both Mali and Burkina Faso, neighbouring countries of Niger, have warned against any external intervention to restore the deposed government, deeming it a declaration of war. Despite this statement, analysts are sceptical due to the challenges both nations are facing in combating jihadist insurgencies.
While there were reports of supporters of the junta burning French flags and attacking the French embassy in Niamey, the French foreign office stated that evacuations would take place within a "limited time span" to ensure the safety of citizens amidst the volatile situation.
Other European nations, including Italy, Spain, and Germany, have also taken measures to evacuate their citizens from Niger, anticipating the potential escalation of conflict. Italy has arranged a special flight to repatriate its nationals, while Spain is preparing to evacuate more than 70 citizens by air. Germany is encouraging its citizens to join the French evacuation flights.
The situation in Niger remains tense, with President Bazoum being detained by his own presidential guard. The country has experienced several coups in recent years, similar to those witnessed in other Sahel countries like Mali and Burkina Faso.
