Brazilian Jose Paulino Gomes, believed to be the world's oldest living man, has passed away at the age of 127, just one week before his 128th birthday, NDTV reported on August 1. He died at his home in Pedra Bonita, Minas Gerais, and was laid to rest at Corrego dos Fialhos Cemetery in the same town. His family attributed his death to organ failure, likely due to his advanced age.
Mr. Gomes' marriage certificate from 1917 confirmed his birthday as August 4, 1895, making him a survivor of both World Wars and three pandemics. While there were initial doubts about his age, a local legal adviser for the civil registry verified the accuracy of his age, confirming that he was born before 1900.
Although the family is unsure if Guinness World Records will review Mr. Gomes' paperwork to officially recognize him as the world's oldest living man, the current record holder is Venezuela's Juan Vicente Perez Mora, aged 114. The oldest living person, according to Guinness World Records, is Maria Branyas Morer of Spain, who is 116 years old.
Mr. Gomes was known as an animal tamer and remained active in horse riding until four years ago. He lived a simple and humble life, preferring natural and countryside-sourced food over industrialised products. He is survived by an extensive family, including seven children, 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
