Recent media reports indicate that Kazakhstan has experienced an 11% increase in tourist traffic since the advent of 2023 compared to last year. Furthermore, the number of travel agencies has significantly risen.
According to Inna Rey, the president of the country's Association of Tour Operators, domestic resorts have experienced growth in popularity since 2022. During that year, Kazakhstan welcomed approximately 1mn tourists, which tripled in subsequent years. For instance, Aktau alone saw 41,000 foreign visitors purchasing vouchers last summer.
The Alatau mountains in Almaty, the sacred Turkestan, and the Caspian Sea coast are some of the country's popular tourist destinations. Kazakhstan's political stability, national flavor, and reasonable prices have attracted visitors from neighboring countries like Russia, Georgia, and Turkiye.
The preferences of local and foreign tourists entirely align when it comes to domestic tourism. Astana and Alakol could be added to the list of the most visited places.
Inna Rey mentioned that most tourists visiting the Central Asian country are citizens of Russia. Besides, there has been an increase in visitors from Saudi Arabia and India. The tourism industry is looking forward to welcoming Chinese tourists soon. Their goal is to increase the number of inbound tourists to 5mn.
Domestic tourism has also become popular, with 8mn people traveling around the country last year. This year, there will likely be an explosive interest in Alakol, which was previously a significant constraint, as it becomes more accessible.
