The Russian organization "Wagner" was seeking to acquire armaments from Turkey via intermediary agents for use in the Ukraine conflict according to the Pentagon's classified files, which were made public online recently, Washington Post reports.
The intermediaries were meant to come from Mali, an African country. "Wagner" officials met with acquaintances in Turkey to discuss the acquisition of firearms through these middlemen.
Assimi Goita, Mali's acting president, stated that his government might acquire weapons in Turkey on behalf of "Wagner." Yet, it is unknown if the Turkish leadership was informed about the conversations or whether they were successful.
Officials in Turkey declined to comment, and the Mali embassy in the United States did not respond to queries for an explanation.
"Wagner" also sought to hire Russian detainees for the battle in Ukraine, and the Russian Armed Forces had become dependent on the group. According to the article, these files show that US intelligence has extensively infiltrated the Russian army and can offer signals of imminent strikes on Ukraine, as well as assess the Russian Armed Forces' strengths and vulnerabilities.
