At the opening of the International Partnership Initiatives Week, Akmal Saidov, First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, reaffirmed Uzbekistan's commitment to neutrality in military affairs, stating that the country will not join any military formations or international defense alliances.
Saidov emphasized that Uzbekistan prioritizes its sovereignty and independence, rejecting any notion of integrating into military structures such as NATO or other paramilitary organizations.
"The first article of the Constitution states that Uzbekistan is a sovereign state. If we are talking about joining any paramilitary defense structures and organizations, then no, we do not allow it," Saidov declared. He added, "We will never send our guys [abroad] to carry out any military missions, including peacekeeping ones. There will be no foreign military bases on our territory."
This stance highlights Uzbekistan's adherence to the fundamental principles of its foreign policy, as outlined in its Constitution, which underscores the nation's commitment to remaining independent and neutral concerning military alliances and operations.
Turning to economic matters, Saidov addressed Uzbekistan's relationship with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), confirming that the country will maintain its status as an observer state rather than pursuing full membership. This decision, made in December 2020, followed a comprehensive evaluation of the benefits and drawbacks of joining the EAEU.
"More than a thousand documents of the organization were studied, and the conclusion was made in favor of maintaining the observer status," he noted.
Saidov illustrated the rationale behind this decision by referencing the experiences of Kazakhstan, suggesting that the neighboring country has derived minimal benefits from its EAEU membership.
"Today, it is in the interests of Uzbekistan to maintain observer status in the EAEU," he stated.
Despite an interest in economic integration with Eurasian nations, Uzbekistan seeks to retain flexibility and independence in its economic policy, thereby minimizing risks to its sovereignty.
Uzbekistan's consistent position on the international stage remains focused on preserving its sovereignty and independence. This approach is evident in both its military and economic strategies. By avoiding binding military commitments and maintaining a flexible stance within economic unions, Uzbekistan aims to assert control over its policies and territory, reinforcing its dedication to an independent and sovereign foreign policy.
