Ifoda Agro Kimyo Himoya, one of Uzbekistan’s leading fertilizer producers, has inaugurated a new fertilizer production plant, marking a milestone in the country's agricultural sector. The opening ceremony featured attendees, including Änjali Kaur, Deputy Assistant Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and David Hoffman, USAID Mission Director in Uzbekistan.
This new facility is particularly significant as it is the first private enterprise in Uzbekistan to produce granulated organomineral fertilizer. The project is supported by USAID’s Fertilizer Development Fund, which provided Ifoda with state-of-the-art production equipment valued at $460,000. The company complemented this investment with an additional $1mn for construction and equipment.
In 2022, USAID pledged $2mn to strengthen food security in Uzbekistan, focusing on supporting local farmers and fertilizer producers. This initiative aims to safeguard vulnerable populations from the ongoing global food crisis by enhancing both the quantity and quality of fertilizer production within the country.
“Given the rising costs of fertilizers and their impact on global food prices, it is essential to ensure their affordability and availability to farmers. This modern fertilizer production plant, supported by USAID, will enable Uzbek producers to boost production, improve quality, and enhance export potential,” stated Änjali Kaur. “We at USAID are proud to partner with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Government of Uzbekistan in their ongoing efforts to combat food insecurity and to advance President Mirziyoyev’s vision of achieving self-sufficiency in Uzbekistan.”
Beyond improving production capabilities, Ifoda is dedicated to enhancing farmers' knowledge of effective fertilizer usage. In 2019, the company established a stationary soil testing laboratory to assist farmers in determining the precise types and quantities of fertilizers needed to optimize crop yields.
To further extend its services, Ifoda has collaborated with USAID to co-finance mobile soil testing equipment, enabling the company to reach more farmers and improve soil testing services.
