Turkmenistan has announced another call-up for military service for a period of two years. The presidential decree was published in local media.
Men who have reached the age of 18 on the day of conscription, and who have lost the right to deferment until the age of 27, will be subject to military service in October-December 2023.
Turkmenistan has adopted a military doctrine, the essence of which has remained unchanged since 1995 - defence sufficiency, a policy of positive neutrality and refusal to participate in any military-political alliances.
Turkmenistan, with a population of over 6mn, has an army of 30,000 men. Turkmenistan's army is considered the third most powerful of the five Central Asian states, after Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. This is according to a report by the Global Firepower 2023 think-tank.
By land, Turkmenistan borders Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. On the Caspian Sea, it borders Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Russia.
