Turkmenistan has announced another round of conscription for a period of two years. The presidential decree was published in local media.
Men who have reached the age of 18 on the day of conscription, and who have lost the right to deferment until the age of 27, will be subject to military service in April-June 2024.
Turkmenistan has adopted a military doctrine, the essence of which has remained unchanged since 1995 - defence sufficiency, a policy of positive neutrality and refusal to participate in any military-political alliances.
Turkmenistan, with a population of over 7mn, has an army of 40,000.
The country's armed forces are considered the third most powerful in Central Asia, after Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. This is according to a report by the Global Firepower 2024 think-tank.
Turkmenistan's land borders are with Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. On the Caspian Sea, it borders Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Russia.
