Turkmen Defense Minister Begench Gundogdiyev has reported at a meeting of the State Security Council on preparations for a military-tactical exercise, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reported.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who is also the supreme commander of the country's Armed Forces (AF), noted Turkmenistan's commitment to defensive military doctrine.
"It is necessary to properly prepare for the upcoming exercises...At the same time, attention should be paid primarily to the further study and implementation of best international practices in the military sphere," the head of state said.
Ashgabat regularly conducts demonstrative tactical exercises, including in the Caspian Sea. The previous military manoeuvres took place in October, involving all branches of the armed forces: ground forces, navy, air force/defence.
Turkmenistan has had a status of positive neutrality since 1995 and is not a member of any military-political bloc. Turkmenistan's army is considered the third strongest of the five Central Asian states after Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. This is according to a report by the think tank Global Firepower 2023.
Turkmenistan shares land borders with Afghanistan (800 km), Iran (1,148 km), Kazakhstan (458 km) and Uzbekistan (1,650 km). In the Caspian Sea, the country borders Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Russia. The total length of Turkmenistan's maritime border is about 600 km.
