The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan informs that a meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission of Turkmenistan on Caspian Sea issues was held in Ashgabat. The participants noted that the the country invariably takes a proactive position in developing balanced solutions to Caspian issues.
"Turkmenistan played an important role in the development of the legal framework for cooperation in the Caspian Sea and this process continues in cooperation with all Caspian countries within the framework of international law".
The participants discussed in detail the 2024 Action Plan in areas such as economy, security, transport, ecology and holding international events.
The Caspian Sea, which washes the coasts of Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, is the world's largest inland body of water not connected to the world's oceans.
It is unique in that it preserves a variety of relict species of flora and fauna, including the world's largest herd of sturgeon fish.
Experts told Daryo that there are a number of preconditions for possible pollution of the Caspian Sea.
These include the development of hydrocarbon reserves in the sea, high population and industrial density in neighbouring territories, and intensive agricultural development of land in the valleys of flowing rivers.
