The Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, with the support of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), held a seminar for local customs officials on the monitoring and control of ozone-depleting substances (ODS).
Most ODS are gases that actively contribute to global warming.
The State Customs Service of Turkmenistan reports that the expert familiarised participants with the legal structure of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
The training included "practical exercises on ODS identification based on customs documentation, visual inspection of containers and use of ODS labels".
Experts told Daryo that Turkmenistan is taking comprehensive steps to phase out ODS.
Since 1995, 99.95% of the main ODS have been phased out in Turkmenistan. The remaining controlled use of Freon R-22 is expected to be phased out by 2040.
