Turkmenistan plans to hold a ceremony in April 2024 to open the Tejen-Mary section of a new high-speed autobahn between Ashgabat and Turkmenabat, the centre of the Lepab region bordering Uzbekistan.
Local TV station Altyn Asyr reports that the issue was discussed at an extended government meeting.
Experts told Daryo that construction of the 600-km toll highway began in 2019. The total cost of the project is estimated at $2.3bn, and quality control is being carried out by the Austrian company VCE Vienna Consulting Engineers ZT GmbH.
Payment terminals, motels, car parks and road maintenance services will be built along the motorway.
The new motorway will significantly increase the capacity of the country's road system, improve the quality of logistics services and create favourable conditions for accelerating international freight traffic between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
"The connection of the autobahn with the Ashgabat-Turkmenbashi motorway will make it possible to reach the international port of Turkmenbashi and from there via the Caspian Sea to the Caucasus, Europe, the southern region of Russia, northern Iran, the Persian Gulf and Oman".
