Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian told reporters that preparations for Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's visit to Turkmenistan are underway, IRNA news agency reports.
Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov received the diplomat in Ashgabat.
"We agreed to develop cooperation in the fields of energy, transit, transportation, science and technology." Amirabdollahia also added that "a serious jump in trade between Iran and Turkmenistan" can be expected in the coming weeks.
Turkmenistan's Altyn Asyr TV reports that Berdimuhamedov said during the meeting that Iran has traditionally been one of the country's most important partners.
The head of state highlighted the role of the Joint Economic Cooperation Group, whose activities are aimed at agreeing on concrete measures to increase cooperation in the electricity and transport sectors.
"Special emphasis was placed on the importance of finding new forms and methods of interaction in the fuel and energy complex in accordance with modern requirements, activation of relations in the sphere of export and transit of energy carriers".
Earlier it was reported that Turkmenistan and Iran are preparing to sign a 20-year intergovernmental cooperation agreement.
The two neighbouring countries have jointly implemented a number of major infrastructure projects. These include the "Dostluk" dam and the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway, as well as cross-border gas pipelines and power lines.
