The General Directorate of Migration Service of Turkey reports that as of January 2024, there are more than 1.1mn foreigners with residence permits in the country, of which Turkmenistan nationals are the leaders (110,499).
They are followed by citizens of Russia (10,446), Iraq (90,913), Iran (80,442), Syria (79,929), Azerbaijan (69,539) and Uzbekistan (53,102).
In addition, 71,240 Turkmen citizens have short-term residence permits (first place), 18,7901 have student visas (third place) and 6,719 have family visas (fifth place).
Until recently, Turkmen citizens could visit Turkey without a visa (for up to 30 days). However, at the request of the Turkmen Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visa-free regime, unilaterally adopted by Turkey some 15 years ago, was "temporarily" lifted in September 2022.
