Work is underway to create new cargo flows along the Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman transit corridors and container traffic along the China-Tajikistan-Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Turkey route.
According to the Turkmendemiryollary agency, meetings are also being held to create more favourable conditions for the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey-Europe international multimodal transport corridor.
In 2022, the Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Turkey railway corridor was launched with a total length of more than 4,500km. This way became the shortest and most convenient way for Uzbekistan for export-import operations with Turkey.
In 2023, 10,799 container transportations were carried out from the territory of Turkmenistan, including 5,614 transit, 2,316 export and 2,869 import.
Today, a multilateral system of transport and logistics components compatible in the directions "East-West", "North-South" is being created. In the future, this system will link border crossing points with the Caspian, Black and Baltic Sea regions.
Turkmenistan aims to expand the transport potential of the region.
In this regard, efforts are being made to implement the relevant TRACECA documents aimed at expanding the investment potential of the railway corridors along the Asia-Europe, Europe-Middle East, Lapis Lazuli, Caspian Sea-Black Sea routes.
TRACECA (abbreviation for Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia) is an international cooperation programme established in 1993 and funded by the EU. Its leitmotif is the development of a transport corridor from Europe to Central Asian countries via the Black Sea, the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea.
Experts told Daryo that implementation of the programme would improve the investment climate in the partner countries through which the transport corridor is planned and promote their integration with the European Union.
For Turkmenistan, the border with Uzbekistan is the longest among its neighbours - about 1,700km.
