The World Trade Organisation (WTO) reports that Turkmenistan plans to finalise its Memorandum on Foreign Trade Regime by mid-2024.
Submission of this document is one of the conditions for accession to the WTO.
"The importance of timely preparation of the Memorandum was emphasized, since it is the first document initiating Turkmenistan's interaction with the WTO on joining the Working Group, tentatively scheduled for 2024."
WTO experts are discussing with the Turkmen side such issues as import and export tariffs and benefit schedules, other duties and charges, fees for services rendered and internal taxation; quantitative restrictions on imports, including prohibitions, quotas and licensing systems, as well as tariff quotas.
The meetings also covered import and export licensing procedures; customs assessment and pre-shipment inspection; rules of origin; trade facilitation; subsidies and subsidy notifications; trade remedies; and trade rights.
Experts told Daryo that Turkmenistan will have to liberalise trade by removing barriers such as import tariffs, quotas, export subsidies, and dumping practices.
Turkmenistan is the last former Soviet republic to begin negotiations to join the WTO. It aims to join the organisation by 2030.
