The State Customs Service of Turkmenistan reports that it has held a regular online meeting with representatives of the Federal Customs Service of Russia.
The parties discussed issues such as the creation of a simplified customs corridor, the organisation of the exchange of preliminary information and the mutual recognition of the institution of Authorised Economic Transactions.
Turkmenistan last year became an official participant in the North-South International Transport Corridor (ITC) agreement initiated by Russia, Iran and India in 2000.
Experts told Daryo that the distance of cargo transport along this route is more than half that of the sea route through the Suez Canal.
The eastern branch of the ITC runs through Turkmenistan. The Central Asian country's rail network with Russia saw a 57% year-on-year increase in traffic between January and August 2023.
In the search for optimal transport routes, Turkmenistan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan recently agreed to launch a new multimodal "Southern Transport Corridor".
Transit will run from southern Kyrgyzstan to Uzbekistan, then on to Turkmenistan, to the port of Turkmenbashi on the Caspian Sea, and north to Astrakhan.
