At the World Chess Championship held in Samarkand, the refusal of a handshake by Polish Grandmaster Jan-Krzysztof Duda garnered attention. The incident occurred during Duda's match against Russian opponent Denis Khismatulin.
Upon reaching the chessboard, Khismatullin extended his hand for a customary handshake, adhering to the traditional sportsmanship observed in chess. However, Duda declined the gesture, choosing not to reciprocate the handshake. Despite the unexpected start to the match, the grandmasters played, and the game ultimately concluded in a draw.
The final standings of the blitz championship revealed Duda securing the 10th position, while Khismatullin fell outside the top 10.

Polish Grandmaster Jan-Krzysztof Duda achieved the grandmaster title in 2013 at the age of 15 years and 21 days. As of December 2023, he is ranked No. 1 in Poland and No. 16 in the world. His personal best rating of 2760 makes him the highest-ranked Polish player of all time.
Russian Grandmaster Denis Khismatulin achieved the grandmaster title in 2004. As of January 2024, his FIDE rating is 2579. His peak rating was 2714 in March 2014, and he was ranked No. 34 in the world at that time.
Earlier, it was reported that the International Chess Federation (FIDE) has determined that the match between Russian Grandmasters Daniil Dubov and Yan Nepomnyashchiy at the Blitz World Championship in Samarkand was "prearranged."
