The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has determined that the match between Russian Grandmasters Daniil Dubov and Yan Nepomnyashchiy at the Blitz World Championship in Samarkand was "prearranged." Both players have been penalized with a deduction of 0.5 points each, as reported on the official FIDE website.
The incident occurred during the 11th round when the Russian chess players opted for a draw in the 13th round of the game. Ivan Sirovi, the chief judge of the championship from Slovakia, raised suspicions of collusion between Dubov and Nepomnyashchii.
Sirovi expressed his viewpoint, stating, "In my opinion, both chess players share responsibility for this, as they had premeditated the game's outcome. This conclusion is drawn from their strategic moves."
In response to the referee's decision, the Russians were awarded 0 points instead of the usual 0.5 points for a draw. Dubov and Nepomnyashchii contested this ruling, but FIDE upheld Sirov's judgment.
Notably, the Russian chess players are competing in the tournament under the FIDE banner, as they are currently prohibited from participating under the Russian flag due to sanctions.
