Norwegian chess prodigy Magnus Carlsen once again showcased his mastery by clinching victory in the World Rapid Chess Championship held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from December 26-28. The achievement marked Carlsen's fifth win in the tournament, having previously secured the title in 2014, 2015, 2019, and 2022, Gazeta.uz reported.
Carlsen's dominance was evident as he accumulated 10 points in 13 rounds without a single defeat, comprising 7 wins and 6 draws. Russian chess player Vladimir Fedoseev, representing Slovenia, secured the second spot with 9.5 points, including 7 wins, 1 loss, and 5 draws. China's Yu Yangyi claimed the third position with 9 points, featuring 5 wins and 8 draws.
Nodirbek Abdusattorov, a chess player from Uzbekistan, demonstrated commendable performance by scoring 9 points, securing the 11th position in the tournament. Abdusattorov had the potential to secure a spot among the top three winners but settled for a draw in the final game against Volodar Murzin from Russia.
Other notable performances by Uzbek players included Jakhongir Vakhidov in 30th place, Javohir Sindarov in 38th place, Shamsiddin Vohidov in 41st place, and Mukhiddin Madaminov in 44th place. Each of these players accumulated 8 points during the championship.
Earlier Daryo reported that in a recent statement from FIDE ahead of the imminent World Rapid and Blitz Championship in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, the International Chess Federation acknowledges the presence of two of the country's chess talents in the esteemed top 10 grandmasters list.
The World Blitz Championship is set to take place in Samarkand on December 29-30, where Magnus Carlsen will defend his current title.
