Russia is discussing with Turkmenistan the prospects of cooperation in shipbuilding. The parties have held several rounds of negotiations. Denis Afanasyev, deputy chairman of the government of the Astrakhan region, told the TASS news agency.
Astrakhan is a Caspian region of Russia. This form of cooperation becomes particularly relevant with the creation of a new international port and shipbuilding flagship in Turkmenbashi.
"We have good prospects in shipbuilding... Our shipyards are ready for full cooperation with the Balkan shipyard," the official said, adding that Astrakhan can build all types of vessels, from small ships to drilling platforms.
"Our companies have experience in manufacturing the entire range of ship equipment and offshore equipment used for oil and gas production on the Caspian shelf. In addition, there are already several facilities in operation on the Turkmen shelf that were built in our shipbuilding enterprises."
In 2020, it was reported that oil production platforms were built in Astrakhan on Turkmenistan's order and a series of tugs, dry cargo ships and tankers were repaired at a total cost of more than $750mn.
Experts told Daryo that the talks also raised questions about the implementation of the project to create a logistics centre for Turkmenistan in Astrakhan Region and establishment of a regular ferry service between the ports of Olya and Turkmenbashi.
"These initiatives will help boost trade and freight traffic between Russia and Turkmenistan along the Caspian Sea as part of the North-South Corridor".
