Turkmenistan plans to supply 9bn cubic metres of natural gas annually to Iraq within the framework of swap transactions (on a reimbursable basis) with transit Iran.
This was announced by representatives of the state concern Turkmengaz at an energy conference held in Ashgabat on 25-27 October. The potential deal is based on the memorandum signed earlier with the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity.
Iraq faced disruptions to Iranian gas supplies (which accounted for about 40% of imports) this summer, and the government has ordered it to find alternatives.
Experts told Daryo that Iran had previously announced its willingness to re-export Turkmen gas to new markets, up to 15bn cubic metres a year.
This practice has been applied to the supply of gas from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan since 2022. Under the open-ended contract, Iran can receive up to 3.0-4.0bn cubic metres of gas per year from Serakhs, Turkmenistan, for delivery to Astara, Azerbaijan.
These transit services help to supply natural gas to Iranian provinces such as Razavi, North and South Khorasan, Golestan and Semnan, which are far from national gas resources.
