The Turkmendeňizderýaýollary (Turkmen Sea and River Routes) agency reports that from January to September 2023, the total volume of cargo traffic through the port of Turkmenbashi on the Caspian Sea amounted to 2.2mn tonnes, which is 19.9% more than last year.
During the reporting period, the delivery of motor vehicles with cargo increased significantly: more than 19 thousand vehicles were transported by ferry, which is 27.4% more than last year.
According to the information, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan have agreed on preferences and privileges in the use of the infrastructure of their ports in order to increase the overall volume of maritime traffic.
Turkmenistan uses two RO-PAX ferries, Bagtyyar and Berkarar, each with a capacity of 200 passengers and 54 vehicles. Last year, about 22 thousand vehicles were transported on this route.
It should be noted that the annual throughput capacity of the modern port to be opened in Turkmenbashi in 2018 is 17-18mn tonnes. Turkmenistan is ideally positioned to send cargo arriving along the Silk Road from Asia and the Pacific to Europe.
Uzbekistan is also interested in this route. The country's Ministry of Transport has previously reported that transport corridors passing through the port of Turkmenbashi are important for the entire region.
To this end, it has proposed simplifying the requirements and shortening the timeframe for issuing entry visas to Turkmenistan for Uzbek drivers engaged in international cargo transport.
