The third meeting of the Turkmen-Uzbek Business Council was held in Ashgabat, reports the International Information Centre (IIC) of Turkmenistan. The Turkmen side was represented by Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mergen Gurdov, while the Uzbek - by Deputy Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan Jamshid Urakov.
During the meeting they discussed prospects for cooperation in areas such as transport, logistics, agriculture and pharmaceuticals.
The sides also reviewed the current status of the cross-border trade project and encouraged the exchange of national exhibitions. "We hope that good contracts will be signed to further develop bilateral relations," Urakov said in an interview.
According to the IIC, the Business Council is a platform for the implementation of potential investment projects in various fields and promotes mutual trade.
Turkmenistan is among Uzbekistan's top ten foreign trade partners: in January-August 2023, trade turnover totalled $517.0mn, up 1.3% year-on-year.
According to the Uzbek Presidential Statistics Agency, $398.6mn worth of products were imported from Turkmenistan during this period.
In recent years, Uzbekistan has switched to direct energy purchases from Turkmenistan. The two countries recently agreed to establish a border trade zone that would cover the adjacent territory of Turkmenistan's Dashoguz region and Uzbekistan's Khorezm.
Turkmenistan has previously offered to provide Uzbek cargo access to its international Caspian port of Turkmenbashi to reach markets in the Caucasus, Europe, Russia and Iran.
