Israel has entered into a groundbreaking grain agreement with Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan to establish a regional wheat supply alliance with Muslim nations, as per to Israeli media sources cited by Azernews. This long-term pact aims to ensure Israel's wheat requirements amid the global food crisis and ongoing Ukraine conflict, as Israel heavily relies on imports, with more than 90% of its annual wheat consumption being for animal feed.
The war in Ukraine and the economic impacts of COVID-19 have posed challenges for Israel's wheat imports, resulting in soaring commodity prices. To secure a stable supply of wheat, Israel has sought to diversify its sources, leading to this strategic agreement with Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. In exchange for wheat, these nations will receive advanced agricultural technologies from Israel.
Israeli Agriculture Minister Avi Dichter emphasized the importance of such collaborations in ensuring food security in a world where the United Nations predicts that by 2050, around two billion people will suffer from hunger. Climate change and reduced wheat production, coupled with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, contribute to this growing food insecurity crisis.
Russia and Ukraine, historically known as the breadbaskets of the world, have faced disruptions in grain exports, putting millions of people at risk of acute starvation and food insecurity. To address this dire situation, the Black Sea Grain Initiative was recently established, aiming to restore grain and fertilizer supplies to vulnerable populations through cooperation between Ukraine, Russia, the United Nations, and Turkey.
This Israeli-led grain agreement represents a proactive response to global food security challenges, emphasizing collaboration and diversification of supply sources.
