Turkmenistan, the largest energy exporter in Central Asia, saw its natural gas production increase by 9% year-on-year in January-July 2023, while exports rose by 14%, TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
The figures were announced at an expanded government meeting, which also said that the gross domestic product (GDP) of the local economy grew by 6.2% during the period.
The report said President Serdar Berdimuhamedov instructed the government "to start preparatory work for uninterrupted supply of natural gas to citizens, large industrial enterprises, power plants and foreign consumers, taking into account the growing demand for natural gas during the winter period".
Turkmenistan exports gas mainly to China, but also to Russia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. Electricity is imported by Afghanistan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The country is also an exporter of oil products, polymers and synthetic petrol.
In the reporting period, oil production increased by 1%, refining by 1.5% compared to a year earlier, electricity by 5.8%, and exports by 3.9%.
