State Concern Turkmenneft plans to introduce innovative technologies to reduce methane emissions, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reports.
"At present, the State Concern has achieved that almost the entire volume of produced associated petroleum gas is used for the gas-lift method of oil production."
Based on the introduction of innovative and energy-efficient technologies and renovation of existing infrastructure, it is planned to significantly reduce methane emissions.
"This will contribute to reducing and stopping hydrocarbon leaks, as well as improving practices for more accurate emissions measurements."
Methane has more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years after it reaches the atmosphere.
Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov in June ordered the creation of an inter-industry commission to reduce methane emissions. Ashgabat is considering joining the Global Methane Pledge.
Experts told Daryo that leaks are mainly due to wear and tear on oil and gas pipelines and the release of unwanted methane gas, which is extracted along with oil.
