The Moscow District Court has placed under arrest a U.S. citizen of Russian origin named Eugene (Jin) Spector, on charges of espionage, TASS hs reported.
He is believed to be connected to a case involving alleged bribery to Anastasia Alexeeva, a former aide to Arkady Dvorkovich, a former Deputy Prime Minister of Russia. Specific details about the espionage case have not been disclosed yet.
"In June 2021, Spector was initially sentenced to four years in a strict-regime penal colony for his alleged involvement in facilitating a significant bribe. However, after a series of appeals, his case was sent for reconsideration." - stated IO Meduza.
In the same month, Anastasia Alexeeva, a former assistant to Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for accepting bribes. She was found guilty of receiving large-scale bribes.
Dmitry Borisov, CEO of the "Medpolimerprom" group, the second accused in the case, received a seven-year suspended sentence for allegedly offering a bribe.
According to the allegations, Alexeeva received bribes in the form of overseas trips. In 2017, it's claimed that Borisov funded Alexeeva's vacation in Cyprus, valued at over a million russian rubles. In return, Alexeeva allegedly aided the "Medpolimerprom" group in gaining a monopoly in the market for disposable plastic medical products. Spector was identified by investigators as a middleman in the bribery case.
Spector was born and raised in Leningrad, but later moved to the United States and acquired citizenship there. According to RBK, in 2016, Eugene Miron Spector was listed as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the OAO "Medpolimer" group during a government commission meeting on import substitution.
