Germany and Israel forge €3.5 bn Arrow 3 missile defense deal, shifting geopolitical dynamics

Germany and Israel forge €3.5 bn Arrow 3 missile defense deal, shifting geopolitical dynamics

Germany and Israel have sealed a significant arms deal, with Germany set to acquire the cutting-edge missile defense system, Arrow 3, from Israel, Euronews reported. The agreement, valued at €3.5 bn ($3.2 bn), was officially confirmed by Israel's Defence Ministry on August 17, following approval from the United States.

The Arrow 3 missile defense system is designed to intercept long-range ballistic missiles while they are still in the atmosphere, strengthening the defensive capabilities of the acquiring nation. The partnership between Israel and the U.S. in developing this system has added an extra layer of significance to the deal.

As per a statement issued by the Israeli Defence Ministry, the approval from the United States marks a pivotal moment in the strong strategic relationship between Israel and the U.S. Daniel Gold, an Israeli defense official, emphasized the importance of the joint program with the U.S. in advancing the "Arrow 3" defense system, stating that it would enhance Israel's national defense while also extending Germany's defense capability.

The Arrow 3 deal holds multiple implications, both in terms of defense capabilities and geopolitical dynamics. This marks the largest-ever defense deal for Israel and underscores the nation's prowess in advanced military technology. However, the deal could also attract attention from Russia due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Israel, which has refrained from selling arms to Ukraine to avoid antagonizing Moscow, will now need to navigate this delicate situation.

The Arrow 3 missile defense system, with its capability to intercept long-range ballistic missiles outside the Earth's atmosphere, is a significant asset for Germany and its European neighbors. Analysts believe that this acquisition could play a role in Germany's ongoing efforts to coordinate a broader European air defence system, in collaboration with around 15 European countries. This initiative, known as the European Sky Shield, was launched in 2022 and aims to enhance the continent's collective security.

Uzi Rubin, a former director of Israel's missile defense program, highlighted the versatility of the Arrow 3 system. He noted that while it is highly effective against ballistic missile threats, it does not offer protection against cruise missiles or other threats flying at lower altitudes. Despite this limitation, the system represents a substantial advancement in defense technology.
