The UN warned that 2023 could see another surge in attacks on humanitarian workers. The warning was issued on the eve of World Humanitarian Aid Day, which is celebrated annually on August 19.
Preliminary data reveals that since the start of this year, 62 humanitarian workers have been killed in armed conflict zones, 84 have been injured, and 34 have been abducted.
Last year, 116 humanitarian workers were killed. South Sudan remains the most dangerous region for humanitarian workers.
As of August 16, 22 employees were killed in 40 attacks. Sudan is the second most dangerous region, with 19 deaths recorded since the beginning of the year.
Mali, Somalia, and Ukraine humanitarian workers are also at significant risk.
