A European Parliament delegation met with Turkmenistan's Mejlis during a visit to Ashgabat to discuss human rights and ratify the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA), the EU office in Turkmen capital reports.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Turkmen Speaker Dunyagozel Gulmanova met with a delegation from the European Parliament led by Tomas Zdechovsky.
It was noted that joint interaction is developing within the framework of the European Union-Turkmenistan Committee, the Inter-Parliamentary Dialogue, and the Dialogue on Human Rights.
Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of work on the legislative provision of the recently reached agreements between Turkmenistan and the EU. The interlocutors expressed their support for expanding the treaty legal framework.
The sides also discussed prospects for cooperation in trade, transport, communications, and energy.
Bilateral ties have been governed by an Interim Trade Agreement for more than a decade now as the European Parliament has not yet ratified the PCA with Turkmenistan.
In the meantime, a Memorandum on energy cooperation was signed in 2008. Brussels hopes to receive Turkmen gas via the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, and Türkiye.
