President Serdar Berdimuhamedov has approved Turkmenistan's 2023-2024 Roadmap for joining the Global Methane Pledge, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reports. More than 30 countries have agreed to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030.
The new local document lays out an action plan. It includes improving national legislation and working with foreign partners to prepare test projects to reduce methane emissions. Workshops and scientific studies will also be conducted with the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO).
Methane is a threat to the climate that is 80 times more potent than CO2.
Turkmenistan is one of the key energy suppliers in the region and supplies China with the bulk of its gas exports. The fuel and energy sector is responsible for most of the methane emissions caused by human activities.
Turkmenistan and the US recently agreed to set up a joint working group on reducing methane emissions and develop an investment plan. Local experts told Daryo Turkmenistan is working to increase associated gas recovery and minimize natural gas losses during extraction, transportation, storage, and processing.
