Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov received newly appointed French Ambassador Philippe Merlin, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports. French President Emmanuel Macron noted in his message that the diplomat is a Knight of the National Order of Merit.
Berdimuhamedov, during his meeting with Merlin, noted the special contribution of French companies in the development of several sectors of the national economy over the years.
French business in the local market is represented in areas such as construction, transport and space.
Thales Alenia Space implemented a project to build Turkmenistan's first national space satellite.
Bouygues has carried out a number of major projects in Turkmenistan, including the presidential quarter, the administrative centre and university campus in Ashgabat, and a number of hotels and factories.
Experts have told Daryo that the two countries are interested in implementing a project to transport Turkmen gas to Europe. In particular, an option is being considered for a gas pipeline across the Caspian Sea to Azerbaijan and its connection to transnational projects in the European direction.
Total and Gas de France have expressed interest in exploiting the hydrocarbon resources of the Turkmen part of the Caspian Sea.
