A ferry service between the Caspian ports of Turkmenbashi and Baku is operating stably, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reports.
From January to May 2023, the Turkmenbashi International Seaport Ferry Terminal received 213 vessels from Baku and dispatched 214 in the opposite direction. The ferries delivered tens of thousands of tons of cargo in railcars and cars, including construction materials, metal structures, food, light industrial goods, equipment and machinery.
The local ferry terminal can simultaneously accommodate two rail and two road ferries at two separate berths.
The ferry complex covers an area of 230,000 square metres. Its capacity allows it to handle 300,000 passengers and 75,000 vehicles annualy.
A sea cargo-passenger crossing between the two Caspian coastal cities has been in operation since 1962. However, the full potential of this route has been exploited since the launch of the new international port in the city of Turkmenbashi in 2018.
It has a capacity of 17-18mn tonnes per year. Together with the pre-existing port, this figure is close to 25mn tonnes.
The cost of the project, implemented by Gap Inşaat, is more than $1.5bn. Experts told Daryo that the new infrastructure has created new opportunities for shipments arriving in Turkmenbashi along the Silk Road from Asia and the Pacific Ocean, onwards to Europe via ports in Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran.
