Turkmenistan is currently exploring the potential of establishing multimodal freight traffic with China, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan with access to seaports in the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea.
According to local TV channel Altyn Asyr, Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov raised this issue in Dushanbe during his state visit amid a meeting with Tajik Prime Minister Kohir Rasulzoda.
It would be expedient to create new transport and transit corridors connecting the vast regions of Central and South Asia, the Near and Middle East, the TV channel quoted Berdimuhamedov as saying.
The Turkmenistan delegation shared their proposal for exploring the possibilities of establishing a transport route that would connect Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Turkey.
Turkmenistan's Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations source told Daryo correspondent that an estimated 100,000 tonnes of freight had been transported through the country since early 2023, representing a thirtyfold increase compared to the previous year's figures.
Turkmenistan shares land borders with Afghanistan (800km), Iran (1,148km), Kazakhstan (458km), and Uzbekistan (1,650km). In the Caspian Sea, its neighbors are Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Russia.
The Central Asian country has a maritime border that spans approximately 600 kilometers in length.
