Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) reports that talks with a delegation from Turkmenistan have resulted in an agreement to significantly increase electricity supplies from the Central Asian country. The talks on the Afghan side were led by Alhaj Mula Muhammad Hanif Hamza, CEO of DABS.
"We have reached a tremendous increase and changes in imported electricity rate from Turkmenistan, which is a sign of good neighborly cooperation between our countries", the statement said.
The meeting discussed the progress of projects in Afghanistan to supply power to the Nur ul-Jihad substation in Herat, the electrification of Khumab-Karkin, and the construction of the Surhan-Pole-Khumri transmission line. The talks were attended by a representative of Calik Holding (Turkiye), which is planning to build a Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) transmission line.
Afghanistan relies on imported electricity from Central Asia and Iran for over 80% of its power needs. Uzbekistan used to supply almost half of the electricity but now focuses on domestic energy consumption, so Afghanistan needs to find alternative sources.
DABS has previously reported that it plans to increase purchases from Turkmenistan, which currently supplies 20% of Afghanistan's electricity needs. Ashgabat has once built the Turkmen-Afghan transmission lines, Imamnazar-Andkhoy, Serhetabat-Herat, and Rabatkashan-Kalainau, and towards the Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif at its own expense.
